Hypo-Allergenic Qualities. The Siberian breed has the lowest level of Fel-D1 ( a protein found in the saliva and sebaceous glands) of all cats and is the cause of allergies.
The fact that they are Hypo-Allergenic is AMAZING news to the cat lover! CATS produce a protein called Fel-Dh1. This protein causes 85% of the allergies that people allergic to cats suffer from. The Siberian cat produces FAR less Fel-Dh1 then the average cat. The average cat produces 63,000 micrograms of Fel-Dh1, it isestimated that the female siberian produces approx. 200 micrograms of Fel-Dh1 per gram.
Seventy to ninety percent of the population that has cat allergies will most likely be able to live in a house with a Siberian Cat. T he protein is given off when the cat licks or cleans itself and the dried saliva flakes off. Contrary, to popular belief it is not the dander of the cat that is the allergy producer. With that said the Siberian also produces much less dander because they an "oil" based skin.
